What have I let myself in for?

In April 2013, 4 months after having my second daughter, and the baby weight still firmly round my middle I joined a local class – – The Vibe. I was apprehensive at first joining a new class on my lonesome, but from the first session I knew I’d like it (even though I couldn’t walk properly for 5 days!). Run by the lovely Lizzie and attended by a variety of women from young to old(er) it’s a good laugh as well as good exercise. Anyway I digress.

I signed up to a 12 week challenge and in that time I lost 10.25lbs and a total of 10.75 inches. Looking and feeling much better with myself, and having seen some of the group have a great time entering The Spartan Race I registered myself as part of The Vibe team to participate in September 2014. It was totally unlike me and the idea of running through mud is something that makes me cringe, but I felt it would be something to aim for and to keep my motivation up.

Then came the discussion with my brother. For the last couple of years we had spoken about doing the Great North Run in 2014 so in January we entered the ballot. Yesterday we were both told we had been unsuccessful and we were both genuinely disappointed.

And then came the twist of fate……

One of the girls I train with at The Vibe has recently announced her pregnancy, and typically she yesterday she heard she had been given a place to run in the Great North Run, which is a matter of weeks after the due date of her little one.
A few emails exchanged between her and the officials and before you know it her place has been officially changed to me!!

I am thrilled and petrified. I have never done anything like this in my life and now I’m running a half marathon and then a 5k Spartan race which has 15 obstacles in the space of 21 days.

Best start going out on those runs and get training! Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated!

What on earth have I done?!!!!

  1. Good luck! So great to have a goal to work towards, I’m terrible at running but there are so many apps out there that can help, main thing is not to do too much too soon so you don’t hurt your joints etc.
look forward to hearing how your training is going!

  2. Oh my goodness you’re an inspiration! Well done. It’s a great feeling once you start on the road to fitness again ☺️ Will keep updated with your progress on here! #binkylinky

  3. Wow, good for you. It’s going to be tough, but think how fantastic you’ll feel when you’re done. I did a 10k a couple of months before I became pregnant and I found that tough going, not sure I could manège much further. Good luck!

  4. Wow good luck! Being a north east lass I used to stand along the road and watch the great north run every year, and every year I’d say “I’m doing it next year for sure”, now I live in Northern Ireland and watch it on the tv each year and say the same thing. One year I will definately do it, honestly! Good luck with your training xx

  6. Oh wow! Very best of luck with the running. My dh did the Manchester to Blackpool cycle race (a few years ago now!) and was surprised that he managed it fine without going too overboard with the training. You’ll be fine I’m sure. #binkylinky
